Well the only time i was banned i got my avatar back after i was unbanned. So i guess your avatar was somehow offending/stupid to some staff member.

also i understand that during your ban your avatar is removed but once you're unbanned it should come back afaik

You are right, your avatar is only hidden when you are banned, and when you are unbanned it is restored.

You even keep grandfathered avatars or ones that bypass limits.

You can ask an admin to check logs.

not sure if it came back delayed or that some admin changed it back manually but it's back now

Of course, the admins can get rid of your avatar as they ban you, but this is usually only done if you're getting banned because of something in your avatar. Otherwise, it's just hidden.
