How do you make a head-only preview using GIMP? Like, nothing else on he preview except the head.

You mean a spinny right?

Open up gimp, go to filters which is located on the top navigation bar, then go to animation in the drop down menu. In the next mini drop down menu click spinny globe.

Set the index to n color to 0 so you don't get a low quality preview. Usually 10 frames will work too.

You can then either save it as a gif, or you can pull the layers and make still shots of the head like most people do nowadays

After you create the spinny, you will have multiple layers. You can create a new canvas and drag and drop the layers into the new canvas to create a new preview.

You can do map to object as well, that way you can have more angles and control over the lighting.
