Ágætis byrjun

Artist: Sigur Rós
Album: Ágætis byrjun
Year released: 1999

This album is probably one of the most innovative and sonically brilliant chunks of music of it's decade. I know that's a bold statement to make, but holy shit-- this completely redefined my perception of what good music is. Simultaneously minimal and comprised of an enormous spectrum of textures and sounds, Sigur Rós' vocalist Jónsi Birgisson's voice can honestly only be described as dreamlike.

Combining post-rock, ambient and dream pop and (in my opinion) picking up where the Cocteau Twins left off, Ágætis byrjun is a must-listen. For both fans of the genre and anyone who has ever lived past the year 1999.

Here are my two favorite tracks off the album:

Post-rock and rock are two very different things. Rock tends to use the guitar to produce rhythm and lead parts with distinguishable notes and chords, whereas post-rock uses the guitar as a tool to create sonic textures, so to speak. The droning, whale-song sounds you hear near the beginning and throughout Svefn-g-englar is actually a guitar being played with a cello bow.
