I think you should definitely stay away from fps for your first project, it's hard to make these playable at all.

Really you can make anything. Each genre has it's own challenges, and no matter what you do it won't turn out amazing, it will need a lot of work and polish.

If you want to start with an FPS go for it. U3 and Unity both have a lot of resources for newbies, and FPS's are popular.
