It does, a bit confusing, but this is what you need to know:
- Your ELO goes up if you defeat someone with higher ELO
- Your ELO goes down if you lose to someone with lower ELO

You also will get the higher rank of your opponent if he/she has one more ELO point than you and you defeat him/her.

You don't necessarily have to win or lose to someone with more or less ELO for it to change.
Losing means it goes down, winning it goes up.
Of course if the opponents have more or less, it will effect your ELO and rank more.
The past makes you wanna die out of regret, and future makes you depressed out of anxiety. So by elimination, the present is likely the happiest time.

No.. Your ELO and rank will go up if you win, regardless of opponent's ELO/rank..
However, your rank goes up faster if you win against opponents with higher ELO than you.
