Basically get to the highest level (70 was it?) and get 3 friends of equal level to go with you.
Have 2 killing the grubs, 2 aiming for his weak points.

Also run through the crimson armory to get some decent weapons beforehand.

Although me and my brother did it by ourselves. He was maximum level and I was like 50 something. I distracted all the grubs and stuff while he shot Crawmerax. I died several times, but got some great loot when we finished.
I was Roland, he was Mordecai.

I've got a mate who's playing borderlands as well, he's level 69 (I know, I know...) And I'm 60-somthing I'll probably try get level 69 and beat Crawmerfacks with him later, thanks for the help guys.

I like the part where he snipes with an SMG

I suggest an Orion against the small ones. (Or the eridian shotgun)
A Hellfire against the green ones.
A Vitriolic Crux against the purple ones. No good corrosive smgs.
And A Savior against Craw, for the replenishing smg ammo.

You just need 1-2 guys up close running around him and 1-2 (preferably 2) guys sniping him in the background.
