Back in the day, doing things with the left hand, especially writing, was considered the work of the devil and people would go to lengths to stop their child from using their left hand. Most first world countries have moved on from that thinking, but it's possible a couple people in Brazil still have that idea in their heads

I remember my mom saying the same thing for the Philippines, but it wasn't as bad. Assuming that their parents weren't religious, it was more like "Welp, my child is left handed I guess. Hopefully they don't get bullied." It's a completely different story if the parents are hella religious tho.
