ive had a bad experience with norton.

not a really bad one, just the fact that it said, "would you like to update norton security suite"

then it updates, by itself, then tells me that windows firewall must be turned on immediately or my computer could be at risk.
my computer turned out to not only at risk but infected with 37 viruses.
i turned the computer off, downloaded the CA security trial on my friends computer.
next day i put it on the computer and BAM, no more virus, except vista of course.
whell i have never had any serious viruses, but my brother did something really stupid once. he downloaded a "antivirus program" from a site. and as you probably guessed his computer got pretty fucked up.
Swedish Viking
Windows Vista.

Never. Ever. Again.

Hell no. Norton is terrible. More of a resource hogger than 500 vistas combined. However, Avast has a free home edition that is very easy to use. What's better: You can actually do stuff while its scanning.
i liek turtelz xd

Hey! Norton's meant to work that way! It uses 100% of your resources, so viruses wont have any!

not too long ago, I got a virus named atapi.sys

I couldn't even turn on my computer properly.

Well, I used to despise Norton's extreme resource usage back in 2003 all the way up till 2008. However in the new 2010 version they improved a lot and its actually one of the least "heavy" when it comes to consumed resources and performance impact!

Avast... Personally I don't recommend it. When it comes to free versions AVG 9 seems a little bit better IMO, not *perfect* though (actually there's no perfect antivirus...)

Still a paid antivirus is a better choice for those of you who want to feel safer and/or are inexperienced or don't want to be cautious all the time. I recommend Kaspersky over Norton.
For those who handle PC's with care and know how to take precautions a Free antivirus is fair enough plus with the free Comodo Firewall + Malwarebytes + Spybot Search & Destroy + CCleaner + Defraggler and you got yourself a pretty decent free "Internet security".
