Come on, get yourself a start menu. I'm using Classic Start Menu and it seems OK. I previously used iobit's one and it was really good but turned out to be adware.
To be honest I haven't experienced much problems with windows 8, the most annoying one for me is the task manager taking a whole lot of time to open.
In short, I can live with it.

SSD for OS and important programs, HDD for everything else. SSD is for rapid access, but lacks storage space, while HDD has storage, but is slower to access.
