I'd say you should try making one part (let's say, a head) of each texture style or type you can think of, and then, after you have finished, you stick with the one that you felt was the easiest. It can be long, but the reward of finding what texture style suits you best is priceless.
PS: there are weird cases, such as mine, in which you just find every texture style the same. this either means you suck at all texturing styles, or that you're a god of texturing on the rise (I hope I'm the latter)
