I would mostly go with photoshop, it's even better if you have a tablet you can use.

Photoshop is mostly made for photo editing, but seems like it's a great program for making textures too.

Gimp is a little more simpler and doesn't really require too much skill to get used to. The results from photoshop look a little better than Gimp because PS is more professional than Gimp.
I voted PS.

There is no competition, photoshop is a much more powerfull package than gimp.
the possibilities that photoshop brings to the table put it miles ahead of gimp.

gimp is freeware, photoshop costs hudreds, even thousands of dollars, depending on the package you choose. its compatibility with other programmes from the adobe range and blablablabla.

there is no question that photoshop is the better package.
the only questions are, do you want to pay for legit photoshop or use freeware? and what youre requirments are of the package? if you learnt on gimp and only need the basic tools, then gimp is the one for you.
but if you learnt on photoshop, gimp just seems prehistoric.

It may cost thousands, but who's really paying for that? *cough* Thepiratebay
Adobe has trial versions to use that aren't restricted at all for the trial period.

There shouldn't be any question here, Photoshop is by far the better more professional decision. The only real reason to use gimp is if you don't have Photoshop
