Your style of doing it is good, but i found a few problems. Little seam at the back. the sides doesn't look good and the hat seems to be floating on top of the head.

and the flat that you posted doesn't have the shadow of the hat at the front :O

the whole hat seems like it's not touching the head at all. it's just hovering over it.
