Check forests. And by forest I don't mean small gatherings of trees, but the thick, "holy crap I can't see daylight" forests.

Just went to an island far away from my house, found a mineshaft, got 8 diamonds, then found a stronghold inside the mineshaft, then found an apple.

That.... Was epic!

Only problem is, the stronghold doesn't contain a portal, at least I don't think so.

Awesome! xD The apple really makes it worthwhile.

I don't think all strongholds have the portal, I could be wrong though.

If you have one of the floating eye things, toss that (when above ground, otherwise you'll lose it quickly) and see where it takes you.

It'll be hard to get those. They're made out of ender eyes and black rods. The eyes are easy, but the rods could take some time to get.

Blaze rods. Those can be found by killing the mini-tornado dudes (forgot the name, blaze?) in the nether.

Yup, blaze.

But right now, I still can't find the wolves

Hmm, the darker tree forests should be the place to look.

Opp, my mistake. I went outside of my backyard forest (dark trees) and found a few in the light tree forest (front yard) as well. So far they do seem to stick to forests though. Hope this helps.
