If the spar length is a problem, but you still want to improve, you can try running matches. Running matches are what spars were actually derived from. So if you set out to take a realistic approach to a running match rather than trying to win based off of points, you'll find that you can practice various attacks, transitions, openers, run techniques, etc. and do so in a time efficient manner.
I know from experience, as this was what I did for pretty good chunks of time before sparring was big. Back then it wasn't as easy to happen upon a sparring room, and harder still to find a good partner, so it was common to take whatever practice you could get.
