More like the ancient times from what I can remember. If you are looking for a city-building game that takes place in the medieval days I would go for Medieval Lords.

Anything older than the 80's is the medieval days to me.

as far as I know, you can't find anything(in most RTS opinions) better than age of empires 2, so you might aswell stop looking.

Yes, I know it's nowhere near being an RTS but Dragon Age: Origins. It was an amazing game.

I'd reccomend Rise of Nations. It was one of the best games I've played and I started 3 years ago. I believe there was a demo but if you want the full, you gotta buy it.
