Make sure you are using an Iron or Diamond pick. Stone and wood will simply break it, without dropping an item.

is there a way to kepp animals out of my house?
because when ever i leave the house a whole party of animals come in and i cant get in the door! and one time i was being chased by a creeper and the pigs and cows wouldnt let me in!
(P.S, will they read a sign saying STAY OUT!!!!)

I think they spawned in your house.
make sure there is no grass blocks in your home cause they only spawn in grass.
