GMs Are Recruiting

Too flashy? Nah. Everyone loves rainbows.
The time has come again to recruit a new wave of Gamemasters! We're looking for new people to step up and become the smiling face of Nabi Studios and Toribash.

With the fancy teal names on the forums and dark red names in-game, there's no question that the GMs stand out. But what to these people do, besides look dashing and important? The GMs are the guys in charge of hosting nearly all of the events you see around Toribash. From all the in-game events like GM Tourneys and hotseats, to the forum-based design events like the recent Animal Spirit, this is what the GMs do to help keep the game interesting and exciting for everyone playing it.

What does the job entail?

The GM job is, first and foremost, about hosting events and keeping the community active and entertained. This is done in a variety of ways. The most common thing we do is host in-game tournaments for people to compete in and win prizes. We also host a lot of forum-based competitions where people can showcase other skills and test their abilities against the rest of the community. The GMs are also the primary moderators of everything in-game. We go around and make sure everything is running smoothly, we make sure the public servers are interesting and functional, and we take care of any trolls or other nuisances which might be making the game less fun for people.

What does it take to be a GM?

The absolute most important aspect for a GM is creativity. We are constantly looking for new ways to host events and new types of things to do for the players. The most creative people, the ones who can consistently come up with exciting things to present to the community are the ones we want to have on the team working with us to keep things fresh and fun. The best kind of GM is somebody who is not only able to plan and manage events, but who loves playing the game themselves as well. The more active and involved you are with the community, the better you'll do as a GM.

Why be a GM?

Being a GM is one of the best and most fun ways to help the community. GMs get a great sense of satisfaction from seeing their work being a direct influence on how things work in the community and keeping things lively and entertaining. The GMs are all people who have been with the community for some time and have a strong attachment to it, and we want to see it grow and thrive. Being able to have a hand in that is one of the most satisfying things you can do for a community you love.

Do the GMs get paid for their work?

Yes! In the past, the GMs have been exclusively volunteers offering their time and effort for nothing in return. Recently though, it was decided that they deserve to be recognized and compensated for their time. Just last week we introduced a brand new rewards system for the GM that allows them to earn more points for doing their job well. These points can be used on anything from items to customize their toris in-game to fancy forum stuff like animated avatars and unique usertitles. Every GM gets to participate in this system as a way for us to thank them for all of their hard work in the community.

How do I sign up?

Applying to be a GM is easy. You can send a free-form application to any current member of the team. Your application is required to include your timezone, but everything else is completely up to you, so you can tell us whatever you think will help show us that you would be a good addition to the team. The application will then be discussed among the GMs, and if we think you could make a difference, you'll get your chance to prove yourself as a trial GM. Do well there, and you'll soon become a full-fledged member of the GM team.

About the GMs on Toribash TAKEOVER

This thread and the video above explain all you need to know to get involved with the GM team - what's required to get in, how to go about applying, what we want to see, and what you'll be doing if you're accepted onto the team. For more help on applying you can also check out this thread here and watch this video from DrHax. Any further questions can be asked here and we'll be sure to give you an answer, but please do not post here to say "I applied" or "Good luck to everyone else" - leave this thread for questions and discussion about the GMs.

What is bad luck... huehue

But anyway Congratz for new Trial GameMasters. Hope they will put alot of quality into their job
Ho-ho! Ha-ha!
Applications are judged as a whole, one impressive statistic doesn't grant approval.
Present to me the most beautiful woman, and I shall reward you with chronos

I cannot say neko is wrong nor correct, no-one can because the way you approach the application is up to you, and the way to survey it is the same.
the gms leave it up to you to show what you want to show; what you are and why
[19:59] <Lazors> man it's a good thing people don't see what i write here

Think of the application like an exam, with a pass mark of let's say 70%

Now let's say prior hosting experience gives you 30% plus or minus 5% depending on how well/often you host. (for example I host a lot but I had an event that went badly - which would do nothing but hurt my chances.

Ok let's look at your app, the app is just an expression of you and as such is now worth much. So let's say it's worth 10% if done well.

Your reputation counts for a lot, so it is worth at least 20%. If you're a known troll of sorts then that's going to hurt your application. But if you're a member who helps out with the community, has never had a bad experience or shown lack of maturity then you're going to get that full 20%. But say you're a person no one has really heard of. This will leave some mystery because without delving into your posts and infractions they won't know what kind of person you are.

Now lets' look at staff experience, if you're a local moderator than you've proven yourself as a responsible user who is capable of doing a job so this will give you at least 15%. But say you're another staff, like a clan moderator or a market squad. This will really prove your commitment and ability to punish suitably (you'll be used to handing out infractions at the correct times.) And further more you'll be known by everyone as you are already colored name staff. I'd be willing to throw that in as much as 40-50%.

But always remember that a lot of people will be meeting the pass mark so you have to get as high as a percentage as you can.

(This may be complete shit but I thought it was a simple way to explain things.)

Thanks dude, it helped me much! Now I am pretty sure I have deep knowledge how do GMs judge apps!

also m8 wtf u smoking?

[Team Wushu]
Pm me any questions! I will be happy to help.
Lol if you want extra advice towards applying for GM check:

Outside of that: every possible thing about you is considered.

1) Do you have a good personality for hosting (funny, engaging, intelligent) etc things we can observe just from playing Toribash with you.

2) Do you have an infraction history? If so- how serious and how recent.

3) Have you ever held a staff position before? How'd it go? How long?

4) Do you have any forum experience? What about hosting experience? Did it go well?

5) Are you active in-game? Have you been? Is it consistent or bursts of activity then bouts of inactivity?

6) Does the team in general like you, would they work well with you. GM team is in fact a TEAM effort, so you being a good hoster won't be worth it if you've argued and fought with a huge portion of them.

7) Have you been a part of the community for a long time? If you joined 2 months ago you probably don't really get what the jobs really about nor know if it's right for you. Let alone us knowing you're right for it.

Have you made any really bad decisions lately showing lack of judgement, impulsiveness, or immaturity? Any threads you posted that got hall of shamed recently? How about recent post history- were they quality posts or rubbish?

9) Do you have any negative affiliations with toxic community members?

10) Have you been so anxious and forward with your application that you've now PM'd, or whispered in game 3 different GMs asking about how your app is going and if you'd make a good GM?

All of that, combined, is what's going to be thought up of and then some. With over 100, maybe 150 applicants, and so far only 6 being accepted, you'e looking at anywhere between 4%-6% acceptance rate, which is right around how many people get into Harvard (and other Ivy Leagues) every year that apply. Any GLARING problem in any of those fields is going to cause a no. A culmination of problems in multiple of those fields are probably going to cause a no. Nobody is 100% clean, nobody is going to be a PERFECT applicant, but holy hell we're going to be a lot more selective than "Well he's nice and he's only been banned once."

Hope I've answered any and all questions you could possibly think of.
