I manage to grab the mouse and key without getting injured. Reaching back inside, I am pricked by a nail. Blood gushes from my hand!

Grab your finger with your other hand, clasping until it stops bleeding and then look into the mouse hole, checking it out safely and evade the nail this time, storing everything in the mouse hole in your inventory.
