Yeah, the final episodes of the original series were a little
"different", but I think that the "End of Evangelion" film
more than made up for that.
I think Shinji is not that standard of a protagonist, but I
may think this way because of what he does in the first
scenes of EoE, which was really disturbing, but maybe I
did think too much of him, but screw Shinji, my favorite
character is Asuka.
My main attraction to anime/manga is mostly the stories,
and on that note, I do try to make sense of everything,
like looking for answers on many things that weren't fully
explained throughout the series, questions like:
what was the 'First Impact' if there was already a second,
what happened to Yuri, why does Unit 01 seem to be more
special, and more elaboration of what really happened. And
since I did find answers to many of these questions, it made
me think of Evangelion as more intricate than when it was
first presented to me.
The remake is fantastic! There is no lack of budget there and
they go all out with their animation. The first film (1.0) and
most of the second one (2.0) is mostly a direct retelling of
the original series, but late into 2.0 is where it really diverges
and turns into more of an original story. And don't even get me
started on 3.0, that one completely changes the tone. 4.0 is
yet to be released, it airs at the end of this year.
