If you have CS4, it's 3D>Map to 3D object>sphere, I do that twice, spin one around, and add text.

Same basic principle, just take the spinny up to 30 fps, delete the frames you don't want and voila!

I think you can map to a sphere with gimp. I know you can make animations, (spinnies) but mapping should still be possible.
