And even then there are still friendly wars between allies.
There really is only one reason why allies are useful, its as Corey said, social reputation. If a group of epic clans are all in an alliance with eachother and a new clan joins that group of alliances then people will think much higher of that new clan.
Not that there's anything bad about a bit of social rep..
