Monk I have been talking to someone, literally like, every day thinking it was you.
Anywhoooo, getting burnt out on standard decks. Currently Rank 8. Feeling like I need to understand what decks I struggle to play against as a player, what losing conditions annoy me the most, and then maybe try my hand at my own deck design to sort of overcome those problems. This is sort of me talking out my deck building thought process.
So I realized losing to Face Hunter probably drives me the most batshit crazy, so having anti-aggro options / a solid start is incredibly important. Additionally, insane starting Tempo Mages are equally infuriating. Went from there and decided "Okay so I need tech two Kezan Mystics for those traps and secrets.". Then I thought, hey Innervate is a card that you're not upset drawing early because you can lay down something big and impactful, or reach for an early swipe, or whatever. Let's build a druid deck with Kezan Mystic.
Deck: Bicurious Druid (Druid felt like the right class, Bicurious because I'm experimenting)
+2 Kezan Mystics
+2 Innervate, Wild Growth for Ramping tools
So now I need early removal, things that kill standard Mid-range paladin, tempo mage, demon zoo, and face hunter, which is most of ladder at this rank when it's not PW.
With that in mind:
+2 Wrath
+2 Swipe
+2 Keeper
And with me now already having 8 spells and hating aggro, I said let's try something different:
+1 Wild Pyro
+1 Bloodmage Thalnos
Basically, I like the reach both give. Swipe doing 5 damage + blizzard damage AoE is solid, Wild Pyro passes the vanilla test and is high priority so baits removal, and card draw never sucks, especially since I hate Azure Drake in Druid.
My thought process now is: I have a standard amount of early game, and I still lose to that early aggro shit by having a standard amount, so I need measures to prevent that:
+2 Zombie Chow
+2 Harvest Golem
+1 Druid of the Claw
+1 Sludge Belcher
Okay cool. I have removal, ramp tools, and an insane early game. But this deck can't fall flat. I need late game tools.
+1 Sylvannas
+1 Dr.Boom
+1 Kel'Thuzad
+1 Sneed's Old Shredder
+2 Ancient of Lore
+1 Chromaggus (Basically, I liked that I only had 1 BGH target, and I can see a situation where Chromaggus lives a turn, and you double draw either a ramp mechanic, removal, or late game power house)
Neato. Certainly we have win conditions now. Many death rattles, many sticky minions, hard to deal with. A LOT of priority kill targets, and there's only so much removal in one game.
Finally, I needed to think about teching cards in so:
+1 Harrison Jones for Hunter, Control/Patron Warrior, and Handlock
+1 Loatheb for Tempo Mage, Patron Warrior, anything Rogue
+1 BGH For literally any control match up.
So yeah. Experimenting with it now, feel free to try it out if you'd like. Not sold on the Wild Pyro yet. I'll provide a log of casual games, and I'll play about 15 before deciding to ladder with it.
