What I struggle the most with though is playing on alternate. I generally make less mistakes not alternating but it's really straining on my hand. I alternate in standard for this reason but it's much harder on taiko. It would probably help a lot to remember those pattern packs.

Not really, if you have a tablet just install its drivers and you should be fine. You can fix there play area.
