Tournament players often have a short name they use in tournaments, and when they play online they use a longer name, as you suggested.

It isn't necessarily the exact same name. For some I am sure it is though.

Depends on the tournament, for many games you can pick whatever name you want when you play LAN. Often for a tournament it will be LAN or private server, either of which you can pick any name.
