If you want to go somewhere with guitar playing, I'd suggest you get into music theory. Reading sheet music proficiently is something you'll pick up from it, for example, along with a great notion of how chords, scales and progressions work.

Best thing you can do for your technique is to pick up on classical guitar stuff. Not joking and coming from a lot of years of guitar playing. (around 15)

Apart from that, practise. There is no such thing as too much practice.
I've learned alot from this site, it has completely free lessons from the basics to the more complex stuff, covering all genres too. He also casts livestreams where you can ask him questions and stuff, which I find pretty neat.

This guy is easy to understand and has songs from easy to hard. I learned some stuff from him, so be sure to check him out.
another cool training for more velocity to the fingers is this tab:

1 ---1-2-3-4---
2 --------------
3 --------------
4 --------------
5 --------------
6 --------------

Try to advance this to the 12 trast, practice this everyday xD
when you complete this you can try the training but in this form:

1 ---4-3-2-1---
2 --------------
3 --------------
4 --------------
5 --------------
6 --------------

and when you practice this a little days, try to start in the 12 trast... regards! xD, im a beginner in the guitar too but this exercise is good xD, my english is bad, sorry.
