No.
Things that sound "wrong" can actually sound good in some people's ears if done in a certain way.
If I would write my songs down they would probably be full of "wrong" chords that shouldn't sound good when sticked together. But in my ears they do sound good.
Music is a subjective matter, there is no Right and Wrong in music. Especially when speaking about playing instruments, you can do so much with a electric guitar: hit it with your fist, mess up with the mic selectors and tone knobs, tune a string while playing it, tune it in a funny way (my 4th and 5th string are both in the same tuning), add or take away strings(my guitar only has 5) etc. etc.
I agree that most of my favorite songs are based on musical theory and I understand that It's helpful if one wants to be a good (in the traditional sense) guitar player. To the orginal poster if you want to play songs of othe people then learn theory learn chords learn to read notes.
My way is different than most people's but I like my guitar playing chaotic and odd. Im not saying my way is the best way I'm just saying that there is an alternative to the traditional guitar playing.
I'm in the process of learning a few more complex chord to add to my E,C,D,G,A to be able to play in my two man lonely rider country project.
I guess that makes me contradict myself.
Guitar playing should be fun do whatever you want as long as you're enjoying it.
EDIT: I'll make it short. Theory is really helpful but you can play guitar without it. All your guitar playing idols who made you pick the guitar up in the first place probably know theory, that is thing worth thinking about.
I like unusual stuff that most people think that is just noise so there isn't actually much sense in listening to me on the subject of guitar playing.
