anything i should know before i do anyone?

Always backup stuff before trying to install. That's the number 1 rule. Just in case you make a mistake.

Linux is only the kernel! There are many distributions but I think that Ubuntu is one of the best. However be careful with formatting and always make a backup, in case something goes wrong.
btw, check out the live system first, it helps if there are driver problems. However Ubuntu 10.04 has got a really nice driver installation programm, so don't worry too much .
