*Perseus "Percy" Jackson is the title character and narrator of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. He is also a protagonist in the sequel series The Heroes of Olympus, which are part of the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, appearing in every book except The Lost Hero, though he is mentioned by Annabeth and some of the other campers.
Character
Percy Jackson is a demigod, the son of the mortal Sally Jackson and the Greek god Poseidon. He has ADHD and dyslexia, and has been expelled from almost every school he has ever attended. He is 12 years old in The Lightning Thief and 16 in The Last Olympian. Like other half-human demigods, he is expected to act as the Olympian gods' agent in the mortal world, taking action where ancient laws forbid direct godly intervention, usually in the form of quests. His personality is described as "changeable" and hard to predict with the exception that he is very loyal to his friends. His powers, which start small and develop as the books proceed, include controlling water, making hurricanes, breathing underwater, and talking to horses, pegasi and fish. He also becomes an accomplished swordfighter and leader, as well as being the leader of the Poseidon cabin at his demigod camp, Camp Half Blood.
Percy Jackson's fatal flaw is loyalty, which he at first questions how it can be a weakness, but then seems to accept it and try to not let it control him. Throughout the rest of Percy Jackson & The Olympians, Percy grows more confident and courageous. He overcomes several obstacles that have been thrown at him to keep him from saving the world. The Blood of Olympus ends with Percy and Annabeth planning to finish senior year in New York before heading to the college in New Rome.
Description
Percy is described as a very handsome young man, with dark black hair and sea-green eyes of his father Poseidon, god of the sea. Sally has noted that Percy looked just like his father, Poseidon. Hazel Levesque has said that he has the handsome looks of a Roman god.
Abilities
Like most demigods, Percy has ADHD and dyslexia, the former because of his godly battle instincts, and the latter because his brain takes more naturally to Ancient Greek and not English. Percy has limited clairvoyance because of his father's unpredictable nature. He has a Greek, unpredictable, singular fighting style and is an expert swordsman. After bathing in the River Styx, Percy was given the curse of Achilles, making him invulnerable except for the small of his back. He loses this power when it is washed away in the Little Tiber. In addition, he has an empathy link with his best friend and satyr protector for Camp Half-Blood, Grover.
Being a son of Poseidon, one of the "Big Three" gods, Percy is more powerful than most of the other children of gods, although most consider him to be the most powerful living demigod. He has a degree of divine authority over his father's domains and subjects. Because he is the son of the god of the sea, Percy is given several water-induced abilities, such as hydrokinesis, a disproportionate amount of superhuman clarity, strength, speed, agility, and endurance in the water, water propulsion, breathing underwater, immunity in water, sailing skills, communication with marine animals, communication with horses, zebras and pegasi, aerokinesis of hurricanes and water-related storms, cryokinesis, heat resistance, and healing when in contact with water.
Magical items
Percy's main weapon is Anaklusmos, which is the Greek word for Riptide, which is the name commonly used. It is made of celestial bronze and was given to him by Chiron the centaur . He first used it against Mrs. Dodds, his pre-algebra teacher, when she turned into a Fury and attacked him. When not in sword form, Riptide appears as a ballpoint pen that writes with celestial bronze ink, as discovered in "The House of Hades". It also always appears in his pocket when lost . It will work only against gods and demigods. It passes through mortals without harming them because they are "not important enough.". It was a weapon of Heracles or Hercules, who received it from Zoë Nightshade . He also uses javelins with a grappling hook and an explosive setting on one occasion. In The Sea of Monsters, his half-brother Tyson presents him with a wristwatch that changes into a shield, but the watch is lost in The Battle of the Labyrinth.
Percy has several magical items obtained from battles against monsters. The first of these is the horn of the Minotaur, which he obtained after killing the beast. Another is the head of Medusa, which he cut off after killing it. He also obtained a lionskin coat when he killed the Nemean Lion, which he later sacrificed as an offering to Poseidon.
Magical animal companions
Percy has two magical animal companions. The first is Blackjack, a black Pegasus that Percy liberates from the Princess Andromeda in The Sea of Monsters. Blackjack becomes Percy's personal steed and they have the ability to speak to one another due to his father being the god of Horses. Blackjack is unfailingly loyal to Percy, and on several occasions manages to save Percy's life. Blackjack is quite fond of sugar cubes and doughnuts. Percy's second magical companion is Mrs. O'Leary,who is introduced in the 4th sequel, Battle Of The Labyrinth. she is a "hellhound" that he receives from Daedalus before the inventor dies in the Battle of the Labyrinth. The Mist causes Mrs. O'Leary to appear as a poodle to mortals, so Percy often refers to her as his "dog". He also knows a Hippocampus named Rainbow who is rather fond of Percy's half brother Tyson. He first appeared in The Sea of Monsters where he helped Percy and his friends entering Luke's boat. He later shows up to save Tyson the cyclops.
