Minecraft 1.9 Prerelease 4 continues to blow me away. They've added so much content, and there's so much to do and work towards, it's freaking insane. Monsters are scary now, they do scary amounts of damage.

This is on standard easy difficulty on an SMP server running 1.9 PL4: Creeper explodes at melee range and you're not wearing any armor? You die. Ghast hits you with a fireball that hits you dead on and destroys the last of your armor or hits you dead on with no armor? You die. You aggro more than 4 blazes in a situation where you're forced to fight them? If you aren't packing potions, you're probably going to die.

You no longer get to run around in iron armor not giving a crap about anything, at least, not in *standard* iron armor.

The XP system that's been integrated into Minecraft is goddamn diabolical. You gain XP for killing animals and monsters, more XP for harder monsters (For the most part...), and you use that XP for enchanting your armor, tools, and weapons, to add protective effects, or double-ore-drop bonuses, or flaming/poison weapon, etc. BUT, if you die, you drop all your XP, and even if you make it back to your corpse, there's a random variable as to how much XP you're going to reclaim from your corpse.

So do you grind XP to the max (50) and then get sweet chants for your diamond breastplate? Good luck dude, but you're probably going to die. (Unless you use chicken critical mass tactics. So much clucking, so much blood, so much death.) What you want to do is spend small amounts of XP enchanting a full set of gear, and then using your improved stuff to gather materials and fight stuff so you can survive for, say, 15 experience levels.

Oh also, the enchantments you can get are random every time you use an enchanting table, and they're written in the alien alphabet from Commander Keen. And even then, there's randomness to the effects you'll get. For those of you who've played collectible card games, it's like the feeling of opening a booster pack.

Some of the enchantments kind of straight up suck. "Bane of Arthropods" deals extra damage to silverfish, spiders, and cave spiders. Situational at best, I suppose. Others though, oh man. Just simple knockback, an enchant for swords you can get if you invest 8 levels or so, totally changes melee combat.

Putting a single level into a gear enchant will still net you Protection I, which is quite worth it, and requires pretty much no grinding at all.

Also, the really dangerous mobs, i.e. Ghasts and Blazes, are quite handily countered by the potions you can immediately create after beating a couple of them.

Blazes, for instance, only do fire damage at range, and once you've killed a few you'll be set to create 8 minute fire protection potions that not only protect you completely from their fireballs, but also protect you from being ghastblasted into lava, since lava becomes thick glowy water to you.
