Endurance Onslaught 6.0
I think that mainstream anime is basically the visible portion of anime itself. Most of us have started watching it long ago and some of us wanted to learn and see more while others didnt. This is when the vast database of not-so-well-known anime comes up.

While the mainstream represents a really important role in anime history, we found little pieces of joy in the whole picture.

We are not to decide whether mainstream counts as anime or not, just check the fact that it is mainstream: people watch it, and the critics are good. They represent character development while regular anime doesnt (not in all cases) since you cant get a real character development seen in 12 episodes.

While the mainstream is closer and friendlier to all of us those who want to know a little more about anime itself begin to watch other series, non-mainstream ones.

I personally think that mainstream is good, who am I to judge thousand's of people's opinions... People who watch them can be considered as people who like anime.

Note: if mainstream wouldnt have all the characteristics of an anime (say art, development, plot etc) then it wouldnt be considered mainstream anime.

If it's good, it's good.

Whether or not something is mainstream doesn't even come in to it. Dragonball wasn't born mainstream (even if it is a shonen battle manga).

At your own risk bro.

Mainstream anime has its strengths compared to lesser known anime, I just don't particularly care for them. It has length, which is nice, but can make it a pain to watch, as literally entire episodes can be dedicated to character development, which can be boring as hell. It has a wider audience base, so I can discuss it with more people, however my discussions are along the lines of "x scene could have so been tentacle porn," so I tend to not get into these discussions anyways.

And there's a few other things that made mainstream anime interesting for me at one point, but I'm too lazy and can't be arsed to remember them. I have tits to watch damnit. That's one downfall of mainstream. Not enough tits.

Fall 2012 Anime List
The list is probably not completed yet but it gives us a good idea of what's going to air after the current horrible season is over.

Fall 2012 Anime List

Based on how it looks, the animes that are going to air next season are pretty generic. Judging from the preview images, though, they're at least of good quality in terms of animation. Planning to follow the following series:
  • Jormungand Season 2
  • Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (Yuru Yuri, anyone?)
  • Seitokai no Ichizon Season 2
  • Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (The plot sounds VERY similar to Kimi ni Todoke)
  • To Love-Ru Darkness (Why the hell not? I'm already reading the manga)
  • Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankei Nai yo ne (Damnit, so many series have been coming out these past two years with long names)
  • Vivid Red Operation (Might drop this one fast)
  • Red Data Girl (Same opinion as the anime listed above)
  • Btooom! (Synopsis sounds like it's a copy of Sword Art Online)
  • Little Busters (Wasn't this one a visual novel?)
  • Robotics;Notes (This one, based on the quick synopsis, might be either amazing if executed correctly or dropped within the first episode otherwise)

This.

Though our opinion may differ, personally, I define mainstream as something that is more well known and generally accepted by people in some cases.

Are mainstream anime are true representations of what anime is? No, but it can define an anime fan. For example if Bob likes watching Naruto then he counts as an anime fan. He likes Naruto and it IS an anime, whether it being mainstream or not doesn't really matter.
You can't judge what anime is from one perspective by watching all the mainstream series while dodging the lesser known ones, or vice versa. Although I found it easier for someone to like anime by introducing the mainstream one, it can help giving a bigger picture of what an anime could offer and so it could help people who wants to dig deeper into it.
Of course, there are people who choose the art over storyline, or character development amongst other things, but that's more into personal choice.
meh where's the second bakuman season....

also a new fate season, i wonder what it will be about

It is alternate universe spin-off, so like, it can be pretty much about everything. Also, it is about to be ecchi/comedy.
