Oh, I never used the lazy newb pack (although I'm still a noob). I thought it was just a pre-installed graphics pack?
@Zayex Meh dont feel bad it isnt anything bad its just for lazy people like you and me yes I use it also and no Im not a newb Im mostly noobish
Its not for noobs its for lazy people it gives you faster access on init.txt and d_init.txt with one click of a button I still configure some stuff myself but it got the basics in it for faster access and the same goes for the utilities
And if you're not using DwarfTherapist, you're probably a masochist.

Yeah basically. Dorf therapist is an awesome thing that should be used, it makes your job as the overseer SO MUCH EASIER. Neat list of your dorfs and their proficiencies, with the ability to quickly allow and disallow jobs with a single click? Yes thank you.

In other news, I got slightly concerned the moment I realized that I could read the ASCII symbols more clearly than actual sprites. But then my brain drew parallels to Matrix, and now all is well. :U

Wait. I thought the lazy newb pack came with it.

That means I've been using the shitty original UI.

I use both DT and the original UI.
Why? I use DT to check the happiness and skill level of my dwarves but the normal UI to actually change their jobs etc. Why? For example, I have one 'specialised' dwarf for important jobs like weaponsmith, armorsmith, engraver, brewer, surgeon, carpenter, mason etc. These have their own workshops and are pretty much working 24/7. It's also the only thing they are allowed to do. For the rest, I have a bunch of dwarves who have ALL farming allowed, ALL hauling, masonry (for rapidly getting a wall built) etc. My fortress works perfectly this way and there is near 0 unoccupation in a 120 dwarves fortress.

Most of the time, I assign one big job at a time. e.g. I set my dwarves to mine a massive load of iron ore, flux stone and limonite/bit. coal. Then I set them to refine the coal. Then I set them to smelt the iron and finally smelt this iron to pig iron and steel. Since the skill level of the dwarves does not affect the quality of the final product but only the time it takes them (which is made up by their amounts), this is an effective way of getting things done in a fort.

After that I may set them to move my animals to a new pasture or haul some useless stone to the atom smasher. So it goes on and on.

I have a serious problem. Somehow I have 40 dwarves (slutty women) and 2 of them went crazy and killed 3 others. Now they're starving, and my hospital isn't working :|

I need some intense help. Anyone interested?

Uhh
That is beyond repair.

1) you need alcohol & food
2) you need a dining room
3) you need beds
4) you need to keep the dwarves occupied
5) bury the dead or their relatives will go insane
6) Get rid of foul miasma quickly
7) don't get artifacts lost or the master will go nuts

That's what generally keeps your dwarves calm

Also, don't kill pets
I have all of those except I have no idea how to make beer, and my dumb shit rangers are hunting rats instead of the various animals.
