F = Fluorine (according to the periodic table)
So, F(x) means that you are multiplying the element Fluorine by the variable x.

It was unsolveable simply because you didn't put the complete equation, which is the reason why I replace it with f(x)
Also, F(x) is an official variable for force at least in our country, you will learn it later.
F=/=f
It can be anything, the purpose of (x) is to show us that the 'x' a rational number over the letter symbol.
So for example, W(x) means a countable rational number of W, which is weight, and so on.
