Do those "n" and "y" stand for anything or could they be replaced with any letters?

They dont stand for anything. They could be replaced with any letter.
And the line stands for 'over'

i.e - n over y would be

To me it seems like unsolveable stuff since there seems to be no way to find out the value of those letters.. Maybe they dont even need those values or maybe I have to make up some values... wth im just confused.
