Basically there is a forum where you can look for people to do events. There are some game modes called Strikes and Raids where you group up with other 5 players or friends and you fight together to beat a really hard boss. You should look it up on YouTube since it's hard to explain.

It's not hard to explain.

There is matchmaking for most general content, but high end specific content has complicated matchmaking systems that make it a pain to work through unless you have a pre-fab squad
I think I might be retired.

You kinda need Nightfall to advance, idk if I heavily relied on Strikes though, I think I got by with only Iron banner.

I watched the first series before, it was pretty awesome. Starting season 2 tonight, pretty excited for it tbh
