Maokai is great, don't listen to what others say if they say he is bad.

He is a very good at initiating, dealing early game harass damage and late game damage, can be played as either AP or tank and he fits both of them amazingly.

Or you can buy champions with RP, but to get RP you have to pay actual money.

So I'm guessing it takes quite a bit of time to get IP?

You get like 100 per win,and every 24 hours theres a first win of the day bonus which gives you 250.
The characters cost:
450,1350,3150,6300.
Those are like different Tiers.
But you can defeat a 6300 champion with a 450,it mostly comes down to skill.
You can also spend IP on runes that give you some attributes.
Also,I never bought the cash,and I still own about 16 characters
