Plot
The game is set in the near future, as a global alien invasion begins. Prior to the start of the game, a group of countries called the Council of Nations has banded together to create XCOM, the most elite military and scientific organization in the history of mankind, tasked with defending them from the alien attack. The player assumes the role of the commander of XCOM, and proceeds to engage in a war against an extraterrestrial enemy with overwhelming technological superiority. -Taken from wikipedia
The story is simple, aliens are invading, you are a special force assigned to taking them all out. Keeping it short it is a turn-based tactical squad-based role-playing strategy game where you have to command a squad of 6(total amount of soldiers available for a squad) to take out a bunch of aliens who are designed to f**k up your day because this game is not easy. If you are looking for a game that is easy or fast to complete then you might as well turn back now.
Still reading? Good, that means you like a challenge, as I mentioned before, the game is not easy. To be honest, I have lost the game a bunch of times already, even on easy difficulty. Speaking of difficulty, there are 4 in total.
Those include
Easy: Designed for players who are new to XCOM or strategy in general
Normal: For people who have played XCOM or strategy games before.
Classic: Meant for XCOM veterans and people very good at strategy games
And
Impossible: Which is purposely made to screw you over and make you sad in every way.
On top of those, there is also an optional mode named Iron Man which disables the ability to revert to a previous save. This means anything that happens will stay that way, period.

Customization
Do you like customization? Tons of equipment? Giving one of your soldiers a weird looking hair? Well, then you won't be disappointed, because this game has all of that, you can research new equipment, build gear and totally customize your team to your liking. This includes weapons, armor, an additional slot for some back-up gear, the way your soldiers look, down to naming them, giving them a nick-name, coloring their armor and changing their appearance. It also has female soldiers for all of you ladies and gentlemen. ;)
So, instead of having a bunch of normal soldiers, the game categorizes them in 4 types
The Assault: This is your front line soldier, he is designed to dish out a lot of damage and get away with it.
The Heavy: This is the meat of the game, it can dish out a lot of damage with heavy weaponry like LMGs and a rocket launcher, while being very supportive at the same time.
The Support: As the name says, this class is mostly about support, being able to toss out smoke grenades for cover, reviving dying soldiers, carrying a lot of support items and so on.

The Sniper: You all know what snipers do, these guys are designed to deal a lot of damage from a long range using their sniper rifles.

Honestly, i have no idea why anyone would want to play this multiplayer, because this is heavily focused to be played in singleplayer.
DESTRUCTION! This GAME has TERRAIN which is MOSTLY ALL DESTROYABLE! THAT'S why it REQUIRES a HUGE AMOUNT of CAPITAL LETTERS and YELLING IN YOUR FACE!
